SMART TECHNOLOGY WILL BE FUNDAMENTAL FOR AIRLINES TO SAFELY RETURN TO THE SKIES IN THE COMING WEEKS

SITA, the technology provider for the air transport industry, today sheds new light on how technology is helping airports and airlines safely resume operations and help implement new hygiene measures to restore passenger confidence after a lengthy shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking after the Aviation Week webinar event Sebastien Fabre, Vice-President Airline & Airport, SITA said: “The past few weeks have seen airlines across the globe tentatively take to the skies. This is reflected in a resumption in activity across our network and improved baggage volumes, up 55% month-on-month in May where volumes were at a record low.”

However, Fabre noted that recovery would be slow. “Our industry must transform the passenger experience to increase traveler safety while balancing economic pressures from slow customer demand. To successfully walk this tightrope and navigate a return to the skies for viable volumes of passengers, airports and airlines need to assimilate new information from governments and health officials, adapt operations immediately and automate processes permanently.”

SITA has introduced solutions that allow passengers to use their mobile device as a remote control for touchpoints such as self-bag drop and check-in kiosks, removing the need to touch any airport equipment. “For example, at San Francisco Airport, we have SITA Flex which enables a full mobile and touchless passenger journey. This means travelers can print bag tags from their mobile phone on self-service bag points.” Added Fabre.

He noted that technology would be fundamental helping airlines and airports to be compliant with new and fast-changing regulations to restore passenger’s confidence in flying. New preventive measures aimed at limiting risk in the airport and onboard will require a new approach to passenger management.

Fabre stated that SITA was rapidly rolling out new solutions that addressed the above challenges, complementing short term hygiene measures such as the use of masks and gloves. These solutions centered on three key areas:

Distancing: Using real-time monitoring technologies along with predictive analytics, SITA can ensure appropriate distancing between passengers at key points across the airport. Predictive analytics will also support more proactive planning. There is also an opportunity to extend the boundaries of the airport where key steps such as check-in and bag drop are managed before arriving at the terminal through a passenger’s mobile.

Hygiene and Sanitation: SITA is helping reduce the risk of infection by avoiding contact at key touchpoints. Using a combination of biometric and mobile solutions, passengers no longer have to touch a kiosk or surface, managing their journey from their phone.

Health checks: In addition to integrating health or thermal checks into key touchpoints such as check-in kiosks, governments will – by leveraging SITA’s risk management solutions – be able to use pre-boarding check (Advance Passenger Processing) and perform analytics on passenger journey data to identify and mitigate potential health risks.

He noted for the airports that are not equipped with the native mobile platform, SITA uses technology to remotely control self-service devices such as kiosks with a mobile phone, removing the need to touch any airport equipment.

Speaking at the webinar, Jeremy Springall, Vice-President Border Management, SITA said: “We are seeing specific regions wishing to allow limited movement within zones first, for example, the trans-Tasman bubble. For governments, this requires an information-driven approach based on real-time data and responsiveness to handle rapidly changing situations.

“A critical element will be for governments to harmonize the approach to checking the validity of health status and sharing this information effectively. Many governments are taking a layered approach to border management, starting well in advance of travel, to identify high-risk passengers before arrival in the destination country, in turn easing the restrictions for low-risk travelers. It’s crucial that health checks in terms of a health ETA or declaration are performed, perhaps up to 72 hours before departure. We’re already starting to see this happen around the world in countries like Thailand and Singapore.”

Springall noted that SITA has been supporting governments around the world to adapt their Advance Passenger Processing pre-clearance checks in support of COVID-19, for example with a South American airport during the early part of the pandemic SITA was able to support them stop passengers from high-risk countries check-in to their flights.

SITA believes a harmonized approach to data management between governments is crucial for mitigating the risk of resurgence.

Springall highlighted how SITA has helped airports identify passengers arriving from high-risk areas who would then be asked to self-isolate at home for 14 days to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Later SITA adapted operations to identify travelers who were sitting in the rows around these passengers during a flight so adequate protocols could be applied to those passengers as well.

Also taking part in the webinar was Erick Barboza, Chief Commercial Officer at Aeris Holding, Costa Rica and Ivan Bassato, Executive Vice President Airport Management, Aeroporti di Roma. To listen to the full webinar, head to the Aviation Week event page.

A10 Networks Delivers Highest Performance DDoS Protection, HTTP/3 and QUIC Protection

Thunder TPS Provides 1.2 Tbps Blocking Capacity with Machine Learning

Fuelled by massive IoT botnets and new reflected amplification exploits, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks continue to grow in size and sophistication and have broken the 1 Tbps barrier. The current pandemic has only increased the threat as cyber attackers find new targets in healthcare, government, online gaming and remote working services. Service providers, MSSPs and enterprises require a new generation of DDoS protection technology to protect their networks.

To respond to this threat, A10 is offering a leap forward for service providers with DDoS protection at the scale required to stop today’s cyber threats. We are releasing the highest-performance DDoS protection appliance to help service providers and MSSPs mitigate the largest DDoS attacks.

The A10 Thunder® Threat Protection System (TPS) 7655 provides up to 1.2 Tbps blocking capacity and 380 Gbps scrubbing capacity. Combining Zero-day Automated Protection (ZAP) powered by artificial intelligence (AI) via machine learning (ML) and advanced software mitigations, Thunder TPS delivers unprecedented protection in a compact 1.5U form factor, enabling customers to efficiently scale-out their DDoS defenses as the threat landscape expands. The Thunder 7655 TPS will be available in Q3 2020.

New Protection for QUIC Protocol Driving Next-generation Applications

In addition, A10 is bringing first-to-market support for HTTP/3 (QUIC) DDoS protection in software.

To ensure the user experience for business and consumer services that are migrating to the cloud, QUIC is rapidly being adopted by content and cloud providers, leading browser developers, such as Mozilla and Google, and is backed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The QUIC protocol provides faster connect times with built-in security versus the traditional combination of TCP and TLS. It also offers a dramatic reduction in latency that will enable better user experience for content-rich web applications. Based on these benefits, HTTP/3 has also adopted QUIC for use on the transport layer.

A10 is the first major software and hardware DDoS vendor to provide DDoS protection for HTTP/3 and the QUIC protocol. Thunder TPS protects this new transport mechanism from DDoS attacks and enables a safer next generation of web services using this protocol. HTTP/3 and QUIC protocol support is available now for all Thunder TPS customers.

NetApp to Acquire Spot

NetApp® (NASDAQ: NTAP), the leader in cloud data services, today announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Spot, a leader in compute management and cost optimization on the public clouds, to establish leadership in Application Driven Infrastructure.

Digital transformation initiatives have accelerated and remain the top business priority, especially in today’s environment, and the public clouds offer the speed and flexibility needed to navigate this new normal as companies find to new ways to work, interact and do business. However, unoptimized clouds can be costly and slow down the business transformation. To address this challenge, an Application Driven Infrastructure translates the application’s workload patterns and drives the best possible level of performance and cost for storage and compute, all done while maintaining the contracted service-level agreement (SLA) and service-level objective (SLO). Together, NetApp and Spot’s Application Driven Infrastructure for continuous optimization will help customers save up to 90 percent of their compute and storage cloud expenses, which typically make up 70 percent of total cloud spending, and will help accelerate public cloud adoption.

“In today’s public clouds, speed is the new scale. However, waste in the public clouds driven by idle resources and overprovisioned resources is a significant and a growing customer problem slowing down more public cloud adoption,” said Anthony Lye, senior vice president and general manager, Public Cloud Services, NetApp. “The combination of NetApp’s leading shared storage platform for block, file and object and Spot’s compute platform will deliver a leading solution for the continuous optimization of cost for all workloads, both cloud native and legacy. Optimized customers are happy customers and happy customers deploy more to the public clouds.”

Spot provides a combination of tools for visibility and automation, that drive continuous optimization of workloads in a single platform while maintaining both SLA and SLO. This relieves DevOps, CloudOps, and FinOps teams from the burden and complexity of managing, scaling, tuning and optimizing cloud resources so that they can focus on business innovation under acceptable budget controls.

“Spot was founded with a vision to revolutionize the way companies consume cloud infrastructure services, using analytics and automation to deliver the most reliable, best performing and most cost-efficient infrastructure for every workload on every cloud,” said Amiram Shachar, Founder and CEO, Spot. “We look forward to joining the NetApp family and building together the future of Application Driven Infrastructure and helping customers to deploy more workloads in the cloud.”

Together, NetApp and Spot will establish an Application Driven Infrastructure to enable customers to deploy more applications to public clouds faster with Spot’s “as-a-service” platform for the continuous optimization of both compute and storage for both traditional IT buyers with enterprise applications, cloud-native workloads and data lakes.

The transaction is expected to close in the first half of NetApp’s fiscal year and is subject to the satisfaction of certain regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

Pirelli 42

The newest RIB produced by TecnoRib, official licensee for PIRELLI-branded inflatable boats, is a walkaround with aggressive styling and refined detailing. The emphasis is on open spaces, from the surprising day area to the sofa in the bow, with a broad range of engine options available.

The PIRELLI 42, which made its debut at boot Düsseldorf 2020, has been designed jointly with Swedish firm Mannerfelt Design Team and will be used either as a shadow boat or a day cruiser.

The first in a new range, it will soon be joined by the PIRELLI 52, a larger model that will share the same style and high performance.

A walkaround with a strong personality, PIRELLI 42 interprets the evolving style and philosophy of the maxi ribs built by the Milan-based shipyard and represents a new step forward in the creative process that began with the PIRELLI 1400.

Given its world debut at boot di Düsseldorf 2020, it is 13.1 meters long, with a beam of 4.10 meters, and has been designed and built to offer an onboard lifestyle that puts the accent on relaxation and comfort. That is why it is fitted with forward and aft sunpads, a day area with an outdoor table and, finally, an underdeck area with a transformable dinette and bathroom.

PIRELLI 42, which will be fitted out to meet the owner’s needs, can accommodate numerous guests in total comfort.

Featuring a combination of sportiness, comfort and a design developed jointly with Mannerfelt Design Team, the celebrated Swedish firm with a long track record in competition craft too. PIRELLI 42 has been created both for everyday use as a mid-range cruiser or as a shadow boat. Ted Mannerfelt, CEO and Design Director of the studio of the same name, made this comment about his contribution: “My team and I have worked to meet the Pirelli design approach and to make this boat stand out, enriching its sporty spirit with clean, elegant lines. We also had a special focus on the areas set aside for relaxation. The boat is easy to drive and can deliver remarkable performance”.

PIRELLI 42 is the first model in a new range targeted at owners in search of the perfect balance between elegance and adrenaline, and the shipyard will soon be launching a larger version too, the PIRELLI 52.

Diesel and petrol engines with a range of power ratings can be installed, up to a maximum 900 hp.

The Women’s World Car of the Year (WWCOTY) updates its logo to align with the latest trends

After ten years, Women’s World Car of the Year has updated its logo to align with the latest trends. Based on the original design from Pear Tree Studios in the UK, the new logo keeps its essence, but introduces some guidelines to reflect the spirit of this decade.

Spanish artist Eva Goes has been in charge of the update. My intention has been to preserve the aesthetics of the previous logo. The silhouette of the woman driver has been kept, as it is a very powerful and attractive image that represents very well this group of motoring women journalists.

The lines of the new logo have been softened and synthesized to adapt more to the present time and to make it more effectively function across all formats, but at the same time keeping the ‘face’ of an empowered woman.

Eva has added a circle to frame the portrait to give it more importance and to allow the logo to work effectively as an imagotype. Eva has also used the large acronym WWCOTY for clarity with the whole title underneath as a fuller explanation.

It has been a great pleasure to work on this logo and to contribute to this group of motorized women from all over the world, says Eva Goes.

Women’s World Car of the Year is the only car awards in the world comprising exclusively women motoring journalists. It was created by New Zealand motoring journalist, Sandy Myhre, in 2009. She is currently Honorary President while Marta García performs as Executive President. The objective of the awards is to choose the best cars of the year. The voting criteria is based on the same principles that guide any driver when choosing a car. It is not a ‘woman’s car’ because such a thing does not exist. Aspects such as safety, quality, price, design, ease of driving, benefits and environmental footprint, among others, are taken into account when casting the vote.

The GCC countries are represented in WWCOTY by UAE based Motoring Jury Shereen Shabnam, Editor in Chief of Millionaire Magazine and Motoring contributor for Madame Magazine, Trending Business Insights and All About Wheels.
