Al-Jazari ‘s Elephant Water Clock exhibit comes to Bahrain

Bahrain Science Centre, a part of Ministry of Social Development is currently showcasing a scale model replica of one of the most famous inventions from the Golden Age of Islamic Science, the Al-Jazari’s ‘Elephant Water Clock’, manufactured by MTE Studios in the foyer area of the centre. The exhibit has proven to be of great interest to the general public who gather around it, read the labels while students learn more about it using educational activity sheets.

Al-Jazari invented the ‘Elephant Water Clock’ for several reasons. It was mainly to tell the time and to showcase the advanced state of Islamic engineering but also to celebrate the universality of Islam in the 12th century.  The Clock includes an elephant from India, an Egyptian phoenix, Persian carpets, Indian water technology, Arabian architecture and Chinese serpents.

Visitors will learn how the clock was used to tell the time to the half hour using an elaborate ball run system that is powered by a perforated bowl technique first devised by the Greeks and then perfected later in India.

Al-Jazari’s clock is one of the most amazing automated machines invented during the middle Ages. Don’t miss this opportunity to see it as the exhibit will only remain there until the last week of January.

Manama Bahrain: Her Highness Shaikha Hessa Bint Khalifa Al Khalifa, wife of His Highness Shaikh Abdulla Bin Hamed Al Khalifa officially opened the Bahrain Science Centre, which falls under the directorate of Bahrain’s Ministry of Social Development. The venue has hosted over 25,000 visitors since it’s soft launch from all walks of life that include students, teachers, intellectual societies and general public.

Shaika Hessa hopes that science learning through fun and interactivity would encourage youth to be innovative and create an environment that promotes the importance of living sustainable lifestyles amongst people of all ages.

According to the Minister of Social Development, Dr. Fatema Al Balushi, the science centre was set up to contribute to formal and non-formal science education through awareness of science and technology among the youth, families and adults through play, while supporting the school curriculum in science, mathematics and technology.

Khalid Ishaq, Assistant Undersecretary of Community Development of Bahrain’s Ministry of Social Development reiterated the role of the Bahrain Science Centre in strengthening the science and technology culture of Bahrain by providing them with a fun infused interactive platform for games and public debates on topical science, engineering and technology issues.

Currently MTE studios manage and operate the Bahrain Science Centre. The CEO of MTE Studios, Ludo Verheyen adds, “It has been shown worldwide that science centres are one of the most effective ways of bringing science and technology into the mainstream of society and strengthening a country’s science culture. We focus and follow international practices in running the Bahrain Science Centre to be at par with leading science centres globally.”

Early last month, Amal Al Buflasa from the Ministry of Social Development revealed that the Bahrain Science Centre will be an active participant in the worldwide events by the community of science centres.

Under the guidance of MTE Studios Imagineering Director, Prof. Mike Bruton, regular weekly programmes at the Bahrain Science Centre includes science debates, science workshops, static electricity demonstrations, art workshops, MAD Science shows, animal story telling and science talks.

Science centres globally have taken the lead in hands-on, inquiry-based learning, and complement formal education sector. They make science fun and exciting so that school students are more likely to be receptive to formal science teaching in the classroom.

During April and May 2013 the Bahrain Science Centre part of the Ministry of Social Development in Bahrain is celebrating the theme ‘Machines & Mechanisms’. One of its displays and activities during these theme months is on the most efficient vehicle ever invented, the bicycle.

The bicycle display demonstrates why the bicycle is so efficient due to its ergonomic design that uses the human body as a source of power, its light weight, streamlining, reduced rolling resistance on the road and reduced friction resistance in the chain and sprockets.

Furthermore, the rider is seated and does not have to support his/her weight, and the reciprocal cycling action allows one leg to recover while the other leg is pushing. Bicycles also have gears that provide mechanical advantage when riding uphill or against the wind, and can free-wheel downhill without any use of energy.

The display also emphasizes that the bicycle is the most environmentally friendly form of transport as it reduces air pollution, does not produce greenhouse gases and therefore reduces our carbon footprint. It also reduces noise levels, consumes fewer resources to make and use, and uses less space than cars and therefore reduces traffic congestion. Bicycles also facilitate healthy exercise and promote a healthy outdoor life style.

The discussion and workshops around the display will focus on the design of the mechanics of the bicycle and should be of interest to people of all age groups.

Week of Chemistry’ at the Bahrain Science Centre

During the week of 22nd to 25th April 2013, the Bahrain Science Centre, part of Ministry of Social Development, will be featuring an intensive week of chemistry shows, discussions and debates.

World famous science educator, Detlef Basel from the Cape Town Science Centre in South Africa will present nine, one-hour ‘Hooked on Science’ chemistry shows throughout the week.

Detlef has over 40 years experience doing science shows and has performed on television and in front of huge live audiences. He is an expert at creating big (but safe) bangs, whizzes and pops and will enthrall you with his mastery of simple chemical elements, many of which can be found in your kitchen cupboard.

The ‘Hooked on Science’ shows are suitable for all age groups and will be presented during the mornings for school groups and during the afternoons and evenings for families. Visit the Science Centre’s website for more details.

Travelling exhibition has attracted thousands visitors since its debut in Asia

Currently touring Asia, ‘Sultans of Science’ will be hosted at Petrosains, The Discovery Centre, located at the PETRONAS Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur to captivate audiences in Malaysia as the third venue for the exhibition since its Asian debut. The global travelling exhibition, also known as ‘Islamic Science Rediscovered’ will open in mid December 2012 in Kuala Lumpur until mid June 2013, showcasing the significant contributions Muslim scholars have made to science and technology.

‘Sultans of Science’ exhibition was created after Dubai, Bahrain and Cape Town based MTE Studios was tasked with theming Ibn Battuta Mall in Dubai. The company researched on the technologies invented by Muslim scholars of the Golden Age of Islam (700 – 1700 CE), such as the Elephant Water Clock before creating it for the Mall.

The exhibits were designed in Dubai and created in Cape Town with the exception of the replica of surgical instruments designed by Muslim scientists in the 14th century. Bahrain’s Ministry of Human Rights and Social Development has appointed MTE Studios to run operations of the Bahrain Science Centre which is slated to open soon to public. Experts in Science Centre and Museums operations and management, the company has been awarded a two year contract for Commissioning and Operating the new state-of-the-art Bahrain Science Center (BSC). According to the Minister of Human Rights and Social Development, Fatima Al Beloushi, the science centre will fall under the Directorate of Family and Childhood Development in her Ministry, and will contribute to formal and non-formal science education and awareness programmes in Bahrain. Khalid Ishaq, Assistant Undersecretary of Community Development of Bahrain’s Ministry of Human Rights and Social Development said, “Importance of science centres to the community and education is undebatable. Our aim is to strengthen the science and technology culture of Bahrain by engaging young people, and their families, in activities that excite their interest in science, technology and engineering.” The Ministry has awarded a two-year contract to MTE Studios to develop the science centre. Pioneering innovations of the Golden Age of the Islamic World to open at The Tech Museum

‘Islamic Science Rediscovered’ also known as ‘Sultans of Science’, the global traveling exhibition created by Dubai and Cape Town based, MTE Studios returns revamped to United States due to popular demand. Originally started at the Ibn Batuta mall in Dubai – UAE, the exhibition has gone global and has been to various venues in the last few years. The highly interactive exhibits will be showcased at the world renowned The Tech Museum from 3rd September 2011 until end of February 2012 after its successful national premiere at Liberty Science Centre in New Jersey. The exhibition was also hosted by Ontario Science Centre and The TELUS World of Science in Canada.

Long overlooked, the remarkable contributions of Muslim scholars in science and technology have quietly floundered as no more than common footnotes of world history. Abbas ibn Farnas and his flying glider, Al-Jazari’s engineering marvels and Al-Khwarizmi with his pioneering method of study and calculations for the movements of the sun, the moon and the five planets known at the time, all but lost.

“This dynamic exhibition challenges the way we examine history and encourages the need to embrace multi-cultural knowledge in a global society,” said Mike Hackworth, Lead Director, The Tech Museum. “Many of our visitors will be surprised to learn that from these ancient desert cities came the theory of vision, techniques of quantitative chemistry and trigonometry and the numeral systems that we use today.”

Now the visitors can discover the innovation, science and technology mastery of one of today’s most misunderstood cultures at the ‘Islamic Science Rediscovered’, opening at The Tech Museum. The global blockbuster exhibition celebrates the contributions of Muslim scholars during the Golden Age of the Muslim World (700 – 1700 CE), in the arts and astronomy to engineering and exploration – discovery that, in some cases, came centuries before Western innovation.

MTE Studios CEO, Ludo Verheyen said, “Each dedicated cluster will educate and entertain visitors of all ages and expects to attract even bigger audiences at Tech Museum. MTE Studios was commissioned to design a large themed Mall named the Ibn Battuta Mall, in Dubai. During the research stages whereby MTE Studios studied the 14th century architecture of Muslim Spain, North Africa, Egypt, India, Persia and China and came across a most interesting image of an old manuscript, depicting a life-size Indian elephant, with an Arabic castle on top and various sculpted figurines and animals such as Chinese serpents. This was visualized to become a unique sculptural element for one of the courts within the Mall. To our delight we discovered that this beautiful sculpture was, in fact, a clock, an ingenious device named, as per the manuscript, the Elephant Water clock and designed by the 14th Century Muslim engineer Al Jazari.

Studying the mechanics of Al Jazari’s inventions prompted MTE Studios to research more about the inventions, innovations and discoveries of that era in the Muslim world, which finally led to the birth of the iconic exhibition ‘1000 years of knowledge rediscovered’, which is still on permanent display at the Mall. Dignitaries, historians and CEO’s from leading science centers around the world at the launch of the exhibition at the Ibn Batuta Mall in Dubai proposed the idea of taking the exhibition and the knowledge global, encouraging MTE Studios to develop the global travelling exhibition, ‘Islamic Science Rediscovered’.

“The exhibition drew record crowds at previous venues allowing visitors to discover and understand how a great civilization created prosperity across large areas from Spain to China. We are delighted to take it a step further by taking it to various parts of the world. We have had tremendous interest from museums and science centres across the globe and we envision the exhibition travelling all around the world.” added Verheyen.

Interesting inventions and mechanisms from ‘Islamic Science Rediscovered’ were recently showcased at the 7th charity dinner of Qatar Foundation’s Social Development Centre (SDC), an event for a charitable cause held at the Sheraton in Doha. Attending and supporting the event were HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, and HH Sheikha Moza Nasser al-Misnad, together with a number of supporters and sponsors. The charity dinner featured the rich past of one of the oldest civilizations in the world. It captured the ‘Golden Age of Islam’ in a theatrical manner. The foyer, leading to the main venue, featured a series of exhibits, flown in from MTE Studios ‘Islamic Science Rediscovered’, the global travelling exhibition also known as ‘Sultan of Science’. Exhibits such as the robotic man, armillary sphere, the astrolabe, the ‘House of Wisdom,’ an interactive library and the elephant clock were displayed. Perhaps the most unique was Al Jazari’s invention, a towering elephant clock nearly 4m high which was unveiled by HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani before the start of the event.

Influenced from the iconic exhibition, one of the signature projects in MTE Studios’ portfolio is the Museum of Science and Technology in Islam (MOSTI) at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
