The Women Worldwide Car of The Year presents the KIA EV9 With The Award for Best Car in the World

WWCOTY delegation travels to Korea to present KIA with the World’s Best Car award

July. Three jury members of Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year were invited to Korea to present the trophy to Kia for the Kia EV9 winning the 2024 supreme award.

The judges – Shereen Shabnam from UAE, Nicole Wakelin from the USA and Sandy Myhre from New Zealand, presented the trophy to Mr Teckkoun Kim, Head of Kia Design Next Group at the Busan International Mobility Show.

It was clear that winning the award was significant to Kia and Mr Kim commented that the win will help the recognition of the EV9. “It gives another twist to customers when juries like yours recognize the EV9 because you are the experts and you know which EV or vehicle works for the consumer experience,” he said.

WWCOTY delegation was also interviewed for Kia’s official social media channels including YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.  Excerpts from the interview will likely be used in a promotional video collaboration with Bloomberg Media and will be featured on their websites.

The three Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year jury members were also the subject of an extensive television interview by Michael Choo of Kia Brand Communications. The theme of the interview was ‘How Kia EV9 became the supreme winner of the WWCOTY award’.

Sandy Myhre (NZ) gave a short history of the awards and discussed how many jury members there are today.  She emphasised the rigorous process adopted by the voting system and said, in the end, the EV9 was a clear winner for 2024.

Shereen Shabnam (UAE) discussed the various unique design aspects of the EV9 from the lowered hipline which creates better vision from inside the car to the ‘star’ cluster headlights which are another unique feature of the SUV.

Nicole Wakelin (USA) talked about the wheel design which, again, is unique and how the sporty spoke image produces an interesting geometric graphic on the surface of the wheel.

All three judges spoke of the significance of the WWCOTY Award and what it will mean to Kia customers around the world.

Dynamic and diverse Taipei: A Vibrant Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Shereen Shabnam

Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, is a dynamic city that seamlessly blends ancient traditions with cutting-edge modernity. From towering skyscrapers to serene temples, bustling night markets to tranquil parks, Taipei offers a rich tapestry of experiences for every traveller. I had ventured into Taiwan for the famous lantern festival, but my journey started with exploring the vibrant parts of Taipei.

My hotel was close to Taipei 101 so naturally this was my first stop. Once the tallest building in the world, Taipei 101 is an architectural marvel. Visitors can take the high-speed elevator to the observation deck on the 89th floor for breath-taking views of the city. The skyscraper also houses a shopping mall with luxury brands and gourmet restaurants.

Next was the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. This iconic landmark is dedicated to the former President of the Republic of China, Chiang Kai-Shek. The grand hall, surrounded by beautiful gardens, features a large statue of Chiang and a museum detailing his life and Taiwan’s history.

The National Palace Museum is another information filled attraction. Home to one of the largest collections of Chinese art and artifacts in the world, the National Palace Museum is a must-visit. The extensive collection includes ancient jade, ceramics, calligraphy, and paintings. Taipei also has The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum to showcase a wide range of contemporary and modern art from Taiwan and around the world.

If you like temples, the Longshan Temple is one of Taipei’s oldest and most famous one and it is a stunning example of traditional Taiwanese architecture. It serves as a spiritual centre for locals and a fascinating cultural site for visitors.

For shopping, there are many options but my guide highly recommends Ximending. Often referred to as the “Harajuku of Taipei,” Ximending is a lively shopping district known for its trendy fashion boutiques, street food, and entertainment options. It’s a popular spot for young people and tourists alike.

The  Taipei 101 Mall is also ideal for luxury shopping, as an upscale shopping center that features high-end international brands, designer boutiques, and fine dining establishments. The Shilin Night Market is also a must as it offers a wide array of goods, from clothing and accessories to electronics and souvenirs. The market is also a foodie paradise with numerous stalls selling delicious street food.

Taipei is a cultural hub with numerous theatres and performance venues. The National Theatre and Concert Hall host a variety of performances, including traditional Chinese opera, modern theatre, and international concerts.

Taipei’s cultural calendar is filled with festivals that celebrate traditional and contemporary culture. The Lantern Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and the Taipei Film Festival are just a few examples of the city’s vibrant cultural scene.

For dining, a visit to Taipei is incomplete without trying Din Tai Fung’s famous xiaolongbao (soup dumplings). This Michelin-starred restaurant is renowned for its delicate dumplings and other Taiwanese delicacies. Taipei is a haven for street food lovers. Raohe Night Market and Ningxia Night Market are great places to start your culinary adventure. For a taste of traditional Taiwanese cuisine, visit local eateries and restaurants that serve the three-cup chicken and Taiwanese hot pot. These dishes offer a rich and flavourful experience of the island’s culinary heritage.

Taipei is surrounded by natural hot springs. Beitou Hot Spring is the most famous, offering a range of hot spring resorts and public baths to relax and soak in the therapeutic waters. For nature enthusiasts, Taipei offers numerous hiking trails with stunning views like the Elephant Mountain (Xiangshan and Yangmingshan National Park, offering beautiful landscapes and diverse flora and fauna.

Taipei has a rich tea culture, and a visit to a traditional tea house is a must. Maokong, located on the outskirts of the city, is famous for its tea plantations and offers scenic views along with a serene tea-drinking experience.

I left Taipei for the Lantern Festival, a journey into a world of mesmerizing light and cultural wonder. Held annually during the first full moon of the Lunar New Year, the festival transforms the night sky into a tapestry of glowing lanterns, each meticulously crafted and often adorned with intricate designs, carrying wishes and prayers for the coming year. Attending this festival was an unforgettable experience and I returned to Taipei with great memories.

Taipei is a city that captivates with its vibrant blend of old and new. Whether you’re exploring its historic temples, indulging in its diverse culinary scene, shopping in its bustling markets, or enjoying its natural beauty, Taipei promises a memorable and enriching travel experience.

A Blend of Elegance and Oceanic Charm: Discovering Biarritz

Shereen Shabnam

Visiting Biarritz, a picturesque seaside town located on the southwestern coast of France has been a highlight in my career as a travel journalist. Known for its luxurious atmosphere, stunning beaches, and rich history, Biarritz has long been a favourite destination for travellers seeking a mix of relaxation and sophistication.

Biarritz is renowned for its breath-taking coastline and world-class surf spots as this was what I noticed first as I ventured to me hotel on the coast.  During my visit to Biarritz, I had the privilege of staying at the magnificent Hotel Du Palais. This iconic hotel, once a summer residence of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, epitomizes luxury and elegance.

The Hotel Du Palais exudes historical grandeur with its Second Empire architectural style. Built in 1855, the hotel has retained its regal charm while offering modern amenities. Walking through its halls, one can feel the opulence of the bygone era, enhanced by antique furnishings and exquisite decor.

The rooms and suites at the Hotel Du Palais are a blend of classic elegance and contemporary comfort. My suite offered breath-taking views of the Atlantic Ocean, a spacious living area, and a luxurious bathroom. The attention to detail in the room’s design made my stay truly memorable.

The hotel’s dining options are nothing short of spectacular. The Michelin-starred restaurant, La Rotonde, serves gourmet French cuisine with a focus on local ingredients. Breakfast at La Rotonde, with its panoramic ocean views, was a daily highlight. For a more casual dining experience, the hotel’s terrace restaurant offers a delightful selection of dishes in a relaxed setting.

In addition to that, Biarritz boasts a vibrant culinary scene. From traditional Basque cuisine to Michelin-starred restaurants, the town offers a variety of dining experiences. Don’t miss out on local specialties and fresh seafood.

The Hotel Du Palais boasts a world-class spa, offering a range of treatments inspired by the healing properties of the ocean. I indulged in a rejuvenating thalassotherapy session, which left me feeling refreshed and revitalized. The hotel’s wellness facilities also include a fitness centre, indoor pool, and sauna.

Biarritz is indeed famous for many thalassotherapy centres, where visitors can indulge in therapeutic treatments using seawater and marine products. These treatments are perfect for relaxation and rejuvenation.

The Grande Plage, the town’s main beach, is perfect for sunbathing and enjoying the Atlantic waves. For surfing enthusiasts, the Côte des Basques offers some of the best waves in Europe, attracting surfers from all over the world.

The town is dotted with historic landmarks. The Biarritz Lighthouse, standing tall since 1834, offers panoramic views of the Bay of Biscay. Another must-visit is the Rock of the Virgin (Rocher de la Vierge), a stunning rock formation with a statue of the Virgin Mary, accessible via a footbridge.

My hotel’s prime location made it easy to explore Biarritz. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll along the beach, a visit to nearby attractions, or a shopping spree in the town centre, everything is within easy reach.

Biarritz, with its stunning beaches, rich history, and luxurious accommodations, is a destination that promises an unforgettable experience. Staying at the Hotel Du Palais added a touch of royal elegance to my journey, making it a perfect retreat for both relaxation and refinement. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or a beach lover, Biarritz has something to offer everyone.

Ajman: The Hidden Gem of the UAE

Natasha Dury

As a child, I knew Ajman just for its coastline as my ballet classes was in a dance centre on the border of Sharjah but over the last few years, this charming emirate has attracted us residents with its unique allure, offering a blend of traditional Arabian culture, stunning natural beauty, pristine beaches, historical sites, and vibrant markets, making it a perfect destination for a serene yet enriching getaway.

One of Ajman’s most compelling attractions is its beautiful coastline. The emirate’s beaches are renowned for their soft white sands and crystal-clear waters. Ajman Beach, with its long stretch of pristine shoreline, offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Running parallel to Ajman Beach is the picturesque Ajman Corniche, a vibrant waterfront promenade that comes alive in the evenings. This lively area is popular with both locals and tourists, offering a range of dining options, from casual cafes to fine dining restaurants. The family-friendly Corniche is also ideal for leisurely strolls, jogging, or simply sitting on a bench to watch the sunset over the Arabian Gulf.

For a glimpse into the emirate’s rich history, a visit to the Ajman Museum is a must. Housed in an 18th-century fort, the museum offers fascinating exhibits that showcase Ajman’s heritage and culture. Visitors can explore artifacts from the region’s past, including ancient manuscripts, traditional weapons, and archaeological finds. The fort itself is a significant historical landmark, having served as the ruler’s residence and the police station before being converted into a museum.

Nature enthusiasts will find paradise at the Al Zorah Nature Reserve, a protected area teeming with biodiversity. The reserve is home to over 60 species of birds, including flamingos, herons, and egrets. Visitors can explore the mangroves and lagoons by kayak, taking in the serene natural beauty and observing the rich wildlife. The area also features a stunning golf course designed by Nicklaus Design, offering a unique golfing experience surrounded by nature.

Ajman is famous for its dhow-building industry, and the Ajman Dhow Yard is one of the largest dhow-building centres in the world. Here, traditional wooden dhows are constructed using age-old techniques passed down through generations as the skilled craftsmen create these beautiful vessels that are an integral part of the region’s maritime heritage.

To experience the local flavour of Ajman, a visit to the Ajman Fish Market is highly recommended. This bustling market offers a vibrant atmosphere where visitors can observe fishermen bringing in their daily catch and vendors selling a variety of fresh seafood. The market also features a section for fruits, vegetables, and spices, providing an authentic taste of the local culture. For a truly immersive experience, try some freshly prepared seafood at one of the nearby eateries.

Ajman’s culinary scene is a delightful mix of traditional Emirati cuisine and international flavours. Seafood is a staple here, given the emirate’s coastal location. Visitors can savour fresh fish, shrimp, and crab at local seafood restaurants. For a taste of traditional Emirati dishes, try the fragrant biryanis, succulent kebabs, and flavourful mezes at local eateries.

Ajman may be one of the smaller emirates, but it is rich in culture, natural beauty, and hospitality. From its pristine beaches and historical sites to its vibrant markets and luxury resorts, Ajman offers a unique and enriching experience for every traveller. Whether you are looking to relax by the sea, explore the emirate’s cultural heritage, or indulge in its culinary delights, Ajman promises a memorable and captivating journey.

Enchanting Hangzhou: A Serene Oasis in the Heart of China

Shereen Shabnam

Nestled within the verdant landscapes of eastern China lies Hangzhou, a city steeped in history, culture, and natural beauty. A group of us recently ventured into this enchanting city to test drive cars and found ourselves exploring tourist sites and creating memories to last a lifetime.

Renowned for its picturesque West Lake, poetic landscapes, and rich heritage, Hangzhou stands as a testament to China’s ancient allure and modern dynamism, offering travelers an unforgettable experience.

After a few days of driving, we headed to the heart of Hangzhou where lies the legendary West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city’s centerpiece. Adorned with graceful willow trees, arched bridges, and serene pagodas, the lake’s ethereal beauty has inspired poets, artists, and philosophers for centuries.

Visitors can leisurely stroll along the lake’s shores, reveling in the tranquil ambiance while admiring the nature and the poetic mist veiling its surface during colder months.

We went on a boat ride across West Lake which unveiled its mesmerizing panorama, allowing travelers to witness the scenic vistas that have been immortalized in Chinese literature and art. One can also explore the islands dotting the lake, each possessing its unique charm, such as the idyllic Three Pools Mirroring the Moon or the serene Lesser Yingzhou Isle.

Hangzhou’s allure extends beyond West Lake, beckoning explorers to discover its cultural treasures. The historic district of Hefang Street offers a glimpse into the city’s past, lined with traditional shops, teahouses, and vibrant folk performances, where ancient traditions harmonize with modernity.

The Lingyin Temple, one of China’s most renowned Buddhist temples, stands as a testament to the city’s spiritual legacy. Marvel at the intricate carvings of the Feilai Feng grottoes, where stone sculptures and serene Buddha figures are nestled among lush greenery, fostering an atmosphere of tranquility and reverence.

Hangzhou’s culinary heritage is equally captivating. Renowned for its delicate Longjing tea and sumptuous cuisine, the city invites visitors to indulge in a culinary journey. Savor the tantalizing flavors of regional dishes or partake in a traditional tea ceremony, immersing oneself in the artistry of tea brewing and appreciation. We were lucky enough to try a wide range of dishes and even enjoyed lunch and dinner at some halal restaurants.

Hangzhou’s modernity harmoniously coexists with its ancient charm. The city’s innovative spirit is evident in its burgeoning mobility and tech scene, contemporary art galleries, and vibrant nightlife, catering to diverse interests and ensuring a well-rounded travel experience.

Hangzhou presents itself as a harmonious blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and modern vibrancy. Whether one seeks serenity amidst scenic landscapes, a deep dive into history and tradition, or an exploration of contemporary delights, Hangzhou beckons with its timeless allure, leaving an indelible mark on every traveler’s heart.

I would love to embark on a journey once again to Hangzhou as it is a city that seamlessly weaves the tapestry of ancient wonders and modern marvels, inviting adventurers to immerse themselves in its beauty, culture, and captivating essence. Here the past and present converge in perfect harmony, offering a travel experience unlike any other in China.

Ramadan in Japan and the UAE: A Culinary Fusion at Sumo Sushi & Bento

Fostering Community Through Food for Mutual Respect and Understanding

In the Land of the Rising Sun, where Shintoism and Buddhism are the main spiritual guides, the Islamic holy month of Ramadan shines as a beacon of cultural harmony, observed by a vibrant Muslim community. This spirit of unity and tradition transcends continents, finding a home in the UAE through the innovative culinary offerings of Sumo Sushi & Bento.

As a testament to the power of cultural exchange, Sumo Sushi & Bento embraces the unique blend of Islamic traditions and Japanese cuisine, crafting a Ramadan experience that resonates with both Japanese expatriates and the local population in the UAE.

Ramadan in Japan is characterized by a strong community spirit, despite the challenges of limited halal food access and fewer mosques. In the UAE, Sumo Sushi & Bento captures this essence by creating an inclusive atmosphere where Muslims can gather to break their fast with ‘Iftar’ parties. These gatherings are more than just meals; they are opportunities for Muslims to share experiences, strengthening bonds over dishes that marry Japanese culinary art with traditional Ramadan fare.

Sumo Sushi & Bento’s food selection for Ramadan is a celebration of this cultural fusion. The menu features “Sumo” inspired meals that integrate the Muslim culture of Japan with preferences prevalent in the UAE. Traditional Iftar ingredients like dates and Middle Eastern snacks are seamlessly blended with Japanese staples such as sushi, tempura, and miso soup. This harmonious blend not only caters to the tastes of Japanese Muslims but also appeals to the UAE’s diverse palate, striking the perfect balance between authenticity and innovation.

The respect for different cultures and religions that is deeply ingrained in Japanese society is mirrored in the operations of Sumo Sushi & Bento. The restaurant actively promotes a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Muslim faith during Ramadan by inviting non-Muslims to partake in Iftar meals. This initiative fosters a more inclusive and harmonious community, echoing the mutual respect and curiosity that pave the way for societal cohesion.

The celebration of Ramadan in Japan and its extension into the UAE through Sumo Sushi & Bento is a beautiful illustration of cultural exchange and mutual respect. The restaurant’s innovative approach to blending Japanese cuisine with traditional Ramadan dishes offers a unique dining experience that resonates with the values of community, understanding, and charity.
