Scenic Settings – Santorini, Greece

By Shereen Shabnam

I fell in love with Greece from the moment I stepped out of the airport in Athens. And while each of the Islands in Greece have their own charm, Santorini still remains a favourite for regular visitors who fall in love with this crescent-shaped precious gem of the Aegean dotted with blue and white villages.

Santorini is actually a group of islands in the southernmost part of Cyclades.  The islands came into existence as a result of intensive volcanic activity and the Santorini islands is still an active volcano.

The whole island is actually a huge natural geological/volcanological museum where you can observe a wide range of geological structures and forms as wells as black volcanic pebbles.

Santorini is considered as the most romantic getaway in Greece with exquisitely clear waters and famous sunsets for the ultimate romantic experience. It has deep blue waters, spectacular rock formations, and vertical cliffs plus white, red and black sand.

Firá is the picturesque capital of the island has traditional architecture and offers an amazing view of the volcano. There are other smaller villages that are peaceful and are surrounded by vast vineyardsand whitewashed cliff-top towns with castles.

For sun, sea and sand, head to the Oia with its wild untamed beauty or Ammoudi, on the harbour of Oia for the charming cafes and restaurants. Then delight your visual senses with azure waters, sun-drenched beaches, magnificent black sand and chiselled rocks.

The wild beauty of the beaches on the eastern side of the island will prove irresistible to sunseekers looking for peace and seclusion with Impressive sculptured rocks, black sand, volcanic pebbles, small ports with fishing boats casting colourful reflections on blue waters and some beech trees.

On the south-eastern side of Santorini, sun-loving tourists will encounter magnificent black sandy or pebbly beaches with shallow waters and with playgrounds so it is perfect for families.

Visitors can also soak up the atmosphere along the lively waterfronts, charming beach bars or head to the modern marina with the Sailing and Yacht Club of Santorini for sailing and yachting.  The staff at the club can guide you to the best spots for scuba diving, windsurfing, jet ski adventures, parasailing, kayaking and other water sports.

Santorini is not just about the sun, sea, sand and sunsets – A visit to Santorini offers the ultimate gastronomic experience with fresh cherry tomatoes, white egg plants, fava, fresh goat cheese found on the island.

After each day of exploring the beauty of Santorini, the best way into the evening is dinner after sunset and then head to bed to dream away about what natural wonders to discover in the different parts of Santorini the next day.

From the UAE, you can get to Athens via Istanbul. If you are looking to combine a few destinations like I did, you can fly Turkish Airlines and spend a few days in Istanbul and Athens and end the holiday in the idyllic island of Santorini.

Land of Midnight Sun – Finland

By Shereen Shabnam

A country of contrasts, Finland is known for endless daylight in the summer when public spaces come to life and for dark Arctic winters that has a profound effect on all walks of life, including a deep appreciation for nature.

Despite being leaders in technology and progressive urban solutions, Finns enjoy time in nature visiting lakes and retreats to the countryside for hiking, trekking, cross-country skiing, playing ice hockey, sled dog touring, riding snowmobiles or driving rally cars.

Helsinki Vibes

If you fly into Helsinki, the capital of Finland, enjoy this vibrant seaside city’s restaurants, beautiful islands, architecture, lakes, shopping and great green parks.  Islands such as Suomenlinna and Pihlajasaari, can be reached by a regular ferry for weekend camping trips. The fortress of Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Finland’s most popular sights, great for a tranquil evening stroll or a picnic. Influenced by Classicism and modernized by Functionalism, Helsinki is possibly best known for its Art Nouveau architecture.

Winter Wonderland

In winter, Finland is a skier’s paradise. Whether you enjoy the thrill of downhill or prefer experiencing cross-country, the ski resorts with their well-maintained ski tracks ensure you find the ideal place. Reindeer sleigh rides are also fun during this time and many believe Santa Claus is Finnish, living in Lapland which attracts even more winter tourists. Winter is also great for ice skating, ice fishing and snowmobiling.

Most visitors go to Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland and the hometown of Santa Claus. Others enjoy the thrill of witnessing the Aurora Borealis, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Visitors love the Finnish Lapland, enjoying the winter wonderland and the hustle and bustle of towns and ski resorts just as much as the peace and quiet of nature. Finland is one of the best places on Earth to view the Northern Lights which appears on more than 200 nights a year in Finnish Lapland.

Summer Soirees

In the summer Finnish Lapland has 24-hour sunlight for nearly three months. Known as the “Midnight sun”, the light allows for numerous events and cultural activities such as the Midnight Sun Film Festival in Sodankylä.

During this time, visit the Blue Lakeland and enjoy hikes along lakes, islands, boat rides on rivers, canals, and among forests and ridges. Visit Hameenlinna, a city with two impressive castles to visit, large park areas to enjoy and galleries and museums to visit – my favourite being the enchanting Iittala Glass Museum.

Autumn Love

In autumn, Lapland is the best place in Finland for witnessing “ruska”, the time when all the leaves turn into bright colors like red, yellow and orange. Seeing ruska is best in mid-September when the already breath-taking landscape transforms into an out-of-this-world experience. If you are an active tourist, Lakeland’s vast waters are perfect for kayaking, fishing and paddling

Culinary Scene

The culinary scene in Helsinki is cutting edge and evolving with new pop-up restaurants. The Restaurant Day and the Helsinki Street Food Festival are initiatives out of Finland and ensures the capital’s coolest culture districts change into street food hubs.

The local food is full of seasonal delights, wild and fresh with game, fish, mushrooms and berries. Innovative food events in the city embrace all culinary cultures and tastes of the globe and the Restaurant Day is growing into a global movement of “food for all”.

If you know a local, they will enlighten you on the joys of having hearty stews to keep warm during the cold months and the many light, fresh and delicious summer local food to stay sustained and satisfied all day.

Day Trips

Make time for Porvoo, the second oldest city in Finland located about 50 kilometres east of Helsinki. It is known for its charming cobblestone streets, manors, iconic red wooden shore houses, small shops, handicraft boutiques, lovely museums, galleries and cafés.

Venture out also to Finland’s coast through wooden towns, lighthouses, historical manors and large national parks stretching over land and sea. The laid-back lifestyle and a strong maritime culture are key characteristics of this fascinating area which also boasts three coastal UNESCO World Heritage sites.

How to get there

From UAE, you can either fly Finnair direct from Dubai or fly Turkish Airlines to Istanbul, and then to Helsinki and back.

Eclectic Poland

By Shereen Shabnam

Poland is an European treasure that remained off the radar of most intrepid travelers in the past but not anymore. The Poland of today is filled with global influences alongside long-standing local traditions.

Polish culture and history runs deep from medieval times to wars but it is the picturesque natural wonders, the food, the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque architecture plus the natural sites that offer many adventures to remember.

I started my Polish adventure by lunching at the trendy Koszyki Hall. It is Warsaw’s social and culinary center, where you can choose a meal in one of numerous restaurants and pubs sitting on tables laden with different cuisines of the world.

A visit to Vistula, the biggest and longest river in Poland was another highlight. Vistula River in Warsaw runs the entire length of the city and walking along the river or taking a scenic cruise seem to be a favourite past time of the locals so we took an evening cruise on a catamaran enjoying the sites and finishing off the evening with a meal at the famous STIXX Bar and Grill.

STIXX is a highly energetic gastronomy venue offering a diverse selection of exquisite dishes from around the world with the vibe of New Warsaw – elegant and sophisticated, yet stylish and entertaining. The restaurant sits amongst curving walkways, water features, modern art and the ever-impressive Warsaw Spire building.

Another favourite was exploring Warsaw in a vintage Nysa 522, which is a spacious and very retro minivan that once used to drive around Polish streets. A guide can give you a history of the city, take you to the most important monuments of Warsaw and tell you about the key historic events of the city.

If you have time for lunch, stop at the Restaurant Concept 13 located on the 5th floor of DH VITKAC. Its large, glassed interior looks out on a beautiful panorama of the capital which can also be enjoyed from the summer terrace. The dishes are international classics with a polish twist partly prepared on teppanyaki grills or in the open kitchen – their bread is addictive so try and pace yourself before your delightful meal arrives.

Another great place to eat is Zoni Restaurant at Koneser Center perfect for food connoisseurs. Zoni offers creative cuisine of Michał Gniadek, the titled Chef of the young generation whose chef’s signature menu is inspired by international cuisine.

If you love fashion, stop by the Gosia Baczyńska concept store. At the junction of old and new Warsaw Praga, the concept store of Gosia Baczyńska features her own design – both in terms of decor and the fashion presented in it with clothes and accessories of world-famous designers.

Another great place to visit is the Wilanow Palace – the royal summer residence of King Jan III Sobieski. Its joyful to explore this wonderful baroque palace which is a place of great beauty. The original architecture of the palace merges European art with old Polish traditions of construction. I really enjoyed strolling through the beautiful garden and the park which was so relaxing that it was heartbreaking to leave.

My next stop was stopping for lunch at MOD restaurant which serves the best ramen soup in Warsaw. It is a small hidden place at Oleandrów Street where you can try the best Asian and international cuisine and finish your meal with delicious doughnuts. If you still have a craving for sweets later in the afternoon, stop at a Wedel chocolatier and taste different kinds of delicious hot chocolate.  Dinner was at Flamimg & Co. which is a place created from passion for travel and unique things and serves Italian, French and American cuisine.

Golf lovers would enjoy a day out at the Sand Valley Golf Course. You can rent a villa, gp for a round of golf, have a casual evening dining with your friends or enjoy a moonlight dip in your private swimming pool. We enjoyed a lovely lunch and a walk around the property.

From the golf resort, we went to the Hotel SPA Dr Irena Eris where I enjoyed a lovely massage, got introduced to great skincare products and strange as it may sound, I found the best one-off artistic pieces of jewellery for everyday wear. The next day I headed back to the airport with a heavy heart making a mental note to get back to Poland with my family and experience more of this amazing country and the many natural attractions it offers travellers and adventure seekers.

From the UAE it is easy to get to Warsaw. I took an Emirates flight to Warsaw and arrived there just in time for a sumptuous lunch. Emirates has daily flights to Warsaw serviced by Boeing 777-300ER departing Dubai at 0810hrs, and arriving in Warsaw at 12:10 local time. Return flight departs Warsaw at 1500hrs and arrives in Dubai at 2245hrs.

Picturesque Romania

By Shereen Shabnam

My journey into Romania revealed a country with spectacular sights dotted with nature, medieval castles and quaint villages and the best food and culture. The visit to Prahova Valley with a stop in Sinaia, one of the most beautiful mountain tourist resorts in Romania is a must.

A hidden gem for travel aficionados, Romania was full of surprises. For instance, the Palace of Parliament is the second largest administrative building and the most expensive administrative building in the world as well as the world’s heaviest building. We found the building served as a perfect backdrop to show the amazing architecture of the city as the building was built with 100% Romanian resources and materials.

Another must visit is the PeleşCastle. Recognized as royal residence by Carol I, the king of Romania, the castle is one of the most beautiful castles in Europe, built between 1873 and 1914 as the summer residence of the kings of Romania. The building, currently owned by the Royal Family of Romania ids filled with the most beautiful decorative art pieces.

As we ventured further to Brasov, we came across variants of gothic, baroque and renaissance architecture with continued our journey exploring the Town Hall Square and enjoyed a walk to the walled citadel and the pedestrian only boulevard for retail therapy. Surrounded by mountains, a walk around Brasov reveals quaint shops and restaurants serving authentic local cuisine.

After a brief stop in Bran at a wine cellar, we then visited Bran Castle, built in the medieval period as a strategic point of defense. Bran Castle, set on a 200 foot high rock was associated with the famous Bram Stoker’s novel and is nowadays known as the “Castle of Count Dracula”. It was one of the dark, scary and yet the most exciting attractions we went to during our trip.

Our journey to Bâlea Cascadă, Transfăgărăşan, the best road in the world according to Top Gear was particularly exciting as we visited the Paltinu Chalet, built during the communist regime and had a Romanian-style lunch on Bâlea Lake, a glacier lake at an altitude of 2034 m.

From Bâlea Lake, we headed to Sibiu, which was European Capital of Culture in 2007. We visited the Astra Museum in Sibiu, the largest outdoor ethnographic museum in Europe. The visit included a carriage ride through the museum park with a tasting of authentic Romanian products. The city was founded at the end of the 12thcentury and is one of the main tourist centers in Romania. Another must stop is Alba Iulia, a town considered Romania’s “second capital” and a place full of history.

My favourite visit was to the Salina Turda, a real Salt Mining Museum in Transylvania. Salt air is good for health, and the place is considered to have the purest air on the planet. It was a surreal experience and we thoroughly enjoyed strolling near the lakes at the bottom of the mine.

These are many reasons to visit Romania from the charming disposition of the locals, the breathtaking landscapes, vampire tourism and the wide variety of fresh wholesome food.

I flew to Romania with Turkish Airlines with a stop in Istanbul. There is enough time to experience the Turkish Airlines award winning lounge in between the flights or enjoy the retail experience at the new airport in Istanbul.

EVO R6 revealed in Cannes

Evo R6 render.png

Europe’s most important Boat Show is the ideal location for EVO YACHTS to reveal Evo R6. This surprising and innovative walk around, almost 18 meters in length, will be given its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival from September 10 to 15. The highly appealing new flagship designed by Valerio Rivellini retains the extending side walls that have brought the shipyard fame and amazes with clean lines, plenty of space and, most importantly, the incredible flexibility of the interior and exterior spaces.

The experience of EVO Yachts and the design flair of Valerio Rivellini come together to create Evo R6: a 18 meters yacht that opens up new horizons in the yachting world and puts the shipyard back into the spotlight.Maximum  flexibility of interpretation and use are two essential features of the new yacht from Evo.
The Neapolitan shipyard, which has gained a reputation right from the outset for models that stand out for their “convertibility”, advanced technology and appealing design, launches its innovative flagship (17.71 meters long, compared with the 13 meters of the previous 43) created under the banner of functional design. The clean aesthetic of the exteriors, featuring a vertical bow, high side walls and impeccably elegant finishings, is matched by spacious interiors.

The result achieved is the perfect balance between exteriors typically found on a walk around, so that the outdoor life can be enjoyed to the full all day, and interiors worthy of a cabin cruiser, with spaces that are roomy, comfortable, simple and refined. In this design too, a key role is played by settings that are remarkably versatile, with extending side walls that almost double the area available in the cockpit.

The exterior design, contemporary and innovative, creating an appealingly sporty silhouette. Aesthetics and function go hand in hand and care and attention have been lavished on every detail. The entire outdoor area is clad in teak, with four distinct spaces defined according to how they are used. In the stern there is the “Transformer”, a modular platform incorporated seamlessly into the beach area, which can be used to embark/disembark from/onto the dock, or alternatively as a sea ladder or diving platform, and even to help launch and haul up tenders and jet skis. The beach lounge has a huge walk around sun deck island in the center, which is all on the same level for comfort and safety and represents a unique feature in this category. The spacious sun deck has room under it for a tender, with two lockers provided for liferafts, water toys or Seabobs. This is also the area where the revolutionary signature feature of Evo Yachts can be found: at the touch of a digital switch, the “XTension” side walls open in a matter of seconds, increasing the space available by 40% and converting the beach lounge into a huge, exclusive private beach. While this appealing innovation is a feature of all Evo Yachts models, it is absolutely unique on the R6, because on a boat almost 18 meters long, the maximum beam with the side walls extended is close to that of a catamaran.

When designing this yacht, there was a special focus on the concepts of conviviality and versatility. Every area of the deck is designed to encourage interaction among guests and ensure that all aspects of the boat can be enjoyed, like the central section containing a spacious L-shaped sofa, a big chaise longue and a retractable LCD television. The backrests can be moved horizontally so that all guests, both forward and aft, can join in the conversation, including the driver. The open galley on deck features a table seating eight, while rotating one of the backrests creates a big C-shaped sofa around the table, which can be opened and increased in size if needed. The double-seat helm station is lightweight, almost suspended, with mirror-finish stainless steel detailing. The forward area offers a huge walk around sun deck and two facing sofas.

While the deck of the new R6 invites the owner and guests to spend as much time as possible in the open air, the real surprise comes when you explore the interiors, which are entered down a backlit steel staircase with suspended plexiglass surfaces. Featuring noble materials like teak, crystal glass, leather and fine fabrics, the settings can be customised and offer a dinette, a kitchen, a VIP cabin in the bow and an owner’s cabin in the stern. Alternatively, a three-cabin, two-bathroom layout is also available. Like every true yacht, R6 provides fully independent accommodation for a crew of one.

The choice of the Volvo Penta IPS propulsion system not only reduces the size of the engine room, but also gives the owner the maximum in terms of performance, reliability, sound-proofing, simplicity of use, reduced consumption and navigation safety.

The two Volvo Penta IPS units offer a choice between 625 hp (IPS 800) and 725 hp (IPS 950) and, at maximum power, drive the motor yacht to a remarkable top speed of 36 knots and a cruising speed of about 28 knots.

Evo Yachts will be attending the upcoming Cannes Yachting Festival
from September 10th to 15th.
