The A 250 Sport: The hottest hatch in town

Mercedes-Benz A 250 SPORT, (W 176), Fahrveranstaltung Slowenien

Mercedes is back in the good books of diva…after their big foray into 6×6 (I really think they should stay out of this segment and stick to their awesome luxury cars), I got news via Bassam that with the new A 250 Sport, Mercedes-Benz has entered an entirely new segment in the Middle East in the luxury compact segment.

I was cynical at first (especially after getting over the 6×6 news)…. it’s just not very ‘Mercedes’ but then I was converted when I saw the images – it certainly looks like a powerful, sporty and luxuriously designed hot hatch that will excite and enthrall the region’s aspirational go-getters of the next-cool-things.

I can only comment on the tech specs and the looks for now because I have not driven the car so my opinion on this is purely from a perspective of someone who loves cars and can comment on the looks and power based on previous experience. It is apparently a powerful four-cylinder, two-litre turbocharged engine that produces a roaring 211 hp and 350 Nm of torque, thundering a market that demands success to 100km/h in just 6.6 seconds….cool aye!

Like most Mercs, it comes with GCC standard specifications and is fully loaded compared to the international market, including a very sporty interior design with red stitching, designo red seat belts, red framed SLS AMG style air vents, comfortable sport seats, aggressive exterior look with diamond grille, red brake callipers, 18” five spoke AMG light-alloy wheels in high sheen black finish and headlamps with red marker rings.

For safety, the standard specification includes, amongst other things, the radar-based COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST system. Smiles will broaden when learning that ownership of a car sporting the unmistakable status of the sparkling three-pointed star starts at just USD$37,000 GCC wide. GCC options in addition to the standard specification include Xenon Lights, Active Parking Assist, and a Light Sight Package (Interior Ambient Lighting).

Launched with the tagline ‘Drive yourself’, the arrival of the A 250 Sport to the region aims to turn the luxury small car segment on its head and marks a new direction for Mercedes-Benz in the region.

In summary…the car has good looks, performance, prestige and attitude, at a price point that makes attainability of the brand a reality for those that may consider owning a Mercedes-Benz as ‘something they want but sometime in the future’.

Wraith …. From Rolls Royce

Wraith Shereen Shabnam

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has just published the third official image of its new Wraith, which will be launched at the Geneva Motor Show on 5 March 2013….of course Diva gets a preview of it as the images unveil and I didn’t wanna be mean and not share it with the world. That’s just how giving I am…even if it is a door it should get RR enthusiasts excited I reckon.

The graceful silhouette gives expression to a bold and thoroughly contemporary luxury motor car. Flowing lines hint at the extraordinary power and dynamic promise of the most powerful Rolls-Royce in history, yet also highlight design cues that can be traced through the model generations.

Rolls-Royce Wraith evokes the pioneering spirit and lust for adventure that drove company forefather the Honourable Charles Rolls – the consummate gentleman racer. But like Rolls, Wraith will also be steeped in the trappings of luxury and opulence. When Wraith is present, for that fleeting moment, the world will stand still.

The newest model in the pinnacle car maker’s range features a luxurious, contemporary interior to complement the dynamic poise of its exterior styling. Luxury and hand-craftsmanship work in harmony, thanks to the inclusion of softest ‘Phantom-grade’ leathers and expanses of open pore wood named Canadel Panelling.

This contemporary finish presents an interior space that hints at the interior of an ultra-luxury yacht. The horseshoe sweep of Wraith’s cabin also echoes the cove at Le Canadel in the South of France where Sir Henry Royce and his design team spent their winters.

Every possible interior detail has been carefully considered – and beautifully executed…watch this space for more images. 🙂

Porsche 918 Spyder prototype completes UAE visit

Porsche 918 shereen shabnam

Heard the squealing voice of a fellow Porsche fan last week about the world’s first hybrid super race car, capable of travelling from zero to 100 km/h in less than three seconds. She was calling to check if I was saying yes to an invitation to go view the said car with her as it made its final UAE stop in Dubai last weekend as part of an exclusive Middle East tour.

The new generation Porsche 918 Spyder prototype, dubbed as the super sports car of tomorrow was presented to a VIP audience at the Porsche Centre Dubai Showroom, as part of a regional tour that includes Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain.

Designed as a high-performance hybrid with plug-in electric module, the model is limited to a worldwide production of just 918 individually numbered supercars with start of production in autumn this year.

Rajaram…who was the first car personality I met via the Millionaire Group was quoted …”With a top speed of over 325 km/h, and a purely electric top speed of over 150 km/h, the 918 Spyder pushes the boundaries in developing new technologies for future vehicle concepts.”

The 918 Spyder features a newly-designed 4.6-litre V8 engine producing over 580 hp, and is accompanied by two permanently energized electric motors on both front and rear axles, producing a combined power output of over 180 kW.

The total power output of the V8 engine and electric motors is over 795 hp, and is coupled to the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), enabling extremely fast gear changes for high performance, comfort and efficiency.

Sharing the same genes as the Porsche 917 Le Mans, the lightweight, high quality materials of the 918 Spyder keep the focus on what’s important: the driver. Intelligent ergonomics keep him comfortable and safe, with height-adjustable bucket seats, a dynamically rising centre console with touchscreen and a central instrument cluster with three separate dials.

The 918 Spyder continues the super sports car line in Porsche history; as technology demonstrators, the driving force behind emotion and evolution alike and the ultimate sports cars of their decade: the Carrera GTS, the first Porsche Turbo, the 959, the 911 GT1, the Carrera GT.

The new Porsche 918 Spyder is available for order now, with a basic retail price in the United Arab Emirates of AED 3,294,000.

Stay safe with 2013 Nissan Altima

Nissan Altima Shereen Shabnam

I finally checked out a Nissan Altima at Al Awir last weekend….briefly… but it gave me a taste of what the car felt like. The 2013 Nissan Altima added another award to its trophy case with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) “Top Safety Pick Plus” designation, which recognizes passenger vehicles for excellent performance in five passenger safety tests.

Starting with 2013 models, IIHS introduced more stringent criteria and requirements to include the “Top Safety Pick” front, side, rollover and rear crash tests, as well as the newly added small overlap frontal test. The Altima scored well for each of these tests, adding the “Top Safety Pick Plus” award to the five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program.

The Nissan Altima is equipped with a variety of standard safety features, including the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System, driver and front-passenger seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags, roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags, Vehicle Dynamic Control, 3-point ALR/ELR seat belt system, LATCH System (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children), zone body construction with front and rear crumple zones and Tire Pressure Monitoring System with Easy Fill Tire Alert, which sounds the car horn to notify a person filling a tire with air when the recommended tire pressure has been reached.

Available features include next-generation Safety Shield technologies, including Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Moving Object Detection systems using an innovative single rear camera.

Fifty Years of McLaren

McLaren...how sexy are cars :)

McLaren…how sexy are these cars 🙂

Friends have pointed out last week to me that I have not talked about cars much recently but due to not being stable and rooted in Dubai, its been hard trying to write as my business trips mean back to back meetings and then collapsing in bed with the computer on my tummy, sometimes with just the headline of a blog typed out.

No sooner I realized that I was losing touch and perhaps getting old, the words of a 27 year old Bruce McLaren popped at me saying ‘Life is measured in achievement, not in years alone.’

When Bruce McLaren penned those words in 1964, his new company, Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd, was less than a year old. In those days, Bruce’s vision was shared by fewer than half a dozen loyal souls, who slogged across the world to race his self-made cars…he was a lucky man with people working with him who believed in him and he did not let them down for the McLaren brand we know today has certainly come a long way.

These days, the McLaren Group employs more than 2000 people, all of whom still share Bruce’s ideals of combining sportsmanship with solid engineering practice and cutting-edge technical expertise.

In September this year, the McLaren Group will celebrate its 50th anniversary….i know it’s a long way away in this diva’s perception of time but I was so taken by Bruce’s words, I just had to write about him, the brand and absorb his philosophy and thought on the fact that perhaps I should not base the success of my life based on years alone but measure it with what I have achieved…although sometimes I feel Tash being a graceful 12-year-old is my one and only big achievement as I get the most joy from her in all aspects of my life.

Going back to McLaren…If we were to follow Bruce’s words to the letter, there’d be little time for recollection, but on the eve of the brand’s half-century, the McLaren team are looking and reviling at the achievements built up in the indelible shadow of their founder.

I am told by sources that the echoes of the brand’s past will reverberate with a series of unique events and celebrations to be held across the anniversary year. ..maybe the scintillating moments with McLaren will help me forget that 2013 in my books means hitting the big 40… I wonder if I should celebrate my big day and a shiny little number from McLaren so that I only have eyes for the sexy looking mean machine and not the wrinkles around my deep intense eyes worrying about what the big 40 holds for me.

Bahrain Science Centre Displays project of Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa

Shereen Shabnam Sheikh Khalifa

As part of the “Bahraini Innovations” theme, Bahrain Science Centre is showcasing the inventions that are done by Bahrainis in the science and technology fields.

One of the showcases that is attracting attention at the Bahrain Science Centre is the car that was assembled in 2007 by His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Hammad Al Khalifa. It all started out as a school project. The son of His Majesty King Hamad created a hand- made car with a difference as part of his grade 11 and 12 physics project at the Ibn Khuldoon National School. He designed and built the car with the help of physics teacher Ghassan Afiouni and specialist welder Abdul Qassim.

The car is a two-seater, manual transmission; vehicle has a 2.4 litre Toyota Hilux engine and chassis, welded together with the rear of a Cushman garden truck. It comprises mainly of shaped piping, giving it a unique look. The car has remote-controlled doors, which swing open at the press of a hand-held device and the doors close automatically. In place of a rear-view mirror there is a camera at the back of the car.

However, the engine is started with a standard ignition key. The whole body is made of safe thermal, laminated glass and chrome. The body and the engine are LED lit and there is an in-built television and DVD player. 18-inch chrome wheels and a ‘mounted’ spare wheel at the back enhance the car’s sporty looks. The sound of the “extremely silent” engine is muffled by a triple silencer system.

The Bahrain Science Centre is located in Building 334, Road 109, Block 801, Riyadh Avenue, Isa Town, Kingdom of Bahrain and can be contacted on 17686466.

World premiere to composition inspired by the Porsche 911 GT1 car

SHEREEN SHABNAM PORSCHE

Cars and music….two things together that mean that I am usually not too far away or at least get a wind of…:). A new composition inspired by the famous Porsche 911 GT1 racing car was given its world premiere by the uncrowned kings of classical saxophone music in Dubai – I wasn’t there which means the event didn’t exactly have the diva touch but I thought since it is a unique combination of the two things I love so much, I just had to put my two cents worth in.

The world-renowned Raschèr Saxophone Quartet from Germany delivered their first public performance of the intriguing work with the title “Straßenversion” (‘street legal’ in English), in the second concert of The Score Classical 2013 series at Dubai’s Madinat Theatre at Souk Madinat Jumeirah. The title of the new composition stems from a desire by Joanna Marsh – a British composer currently residing in Dubai – to write a piece with a subject strongly linked to Dubai.

It is named after the “Straßenversion”, the road legal version of the Porsche 911 GT1 racing car built in 1997, and Marsh has dedicated the piece to Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the designer of Porsches iconic 911, who died last year. The appearance of the Rascher Saxophone Quartet from Germany was a rare treat for Dubai music lovers. The quartet appears regularly at major concert halls around the world and has inspired over 450 composers to dedicate music to them….keep an eye out for them next time!

BMW Group at UN Climate Change Conference COP 18

Since my friends have started making fun of my absolutely beautiful Fiji Islands that it will sink soon, I have started supporting organizations that are helping to make people aware of climate change…afterall, we can’t afford to let paradise go under water.

BMW Group is one company that has continued the long-lasting involvement in the UN Climate Change Conferences during the 18th Conference of the Parties (COP18) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 8th Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP8) that took place in Doha, Qatar.

During several events and panel sessions BMW Group emphasized its commitment to a sustainable business management, the reduction of CO2 emissions in the value chain and to the ongoing reduction of CO2 emissions of its new car fleet. Furthermore delegates of the BMW Group presented the holistic approach of the sub-brand BMW i and its visionary electric and plug-in hybrid cars, mobility services and its new understanding of individual mobility that is strongly defined by sustainability.

At an official side event of the conference held by the Climate Action Reserve and the World Business Council on Sustainable Development (WBCSD), BMW speakers discussed the importance of developing a systematic approach to facilitate the implementation of electric mobility. One relevant factor in this context is the integration of transportation fuels in an emission trading system. The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and BMW Group have analyzed the effects of such an approach in the study CITIES

Further activities of the BMW Group at COP 18 included panel participation at the business side event World Climate Summit 2012, a hub for key business, financier and government leaders to meet and discuss innovative green business strategies.

In addition, BMW Group presented its sustainability strategy and the political implications at the Doha Business Day, organized by WBCSD and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). Since 2008, BMW Group has been a partner and stakeholder in the COP process. With this engagement, BMW Group extends the constructive dialog with key stakeholder to tackle the challenges of climate change….a noble deed indeed!
