Women’s World Car of The Year Reveals 2021 Category Winners

Shereen Shabnam

After a year of testing cars, the jury of the Women’s World Car of the Year are pleased to announce the winners in each of nine categories. These vehicles represent excellence in their segments based on safety, comfort, technology, and value for the money.

As a Motoring Jury based in the UAE, I was able to test the nominated cars easily as we were less affected with lockdowns during the year. This is the eleventh year for WWCOTY, a team of fifty motoring journalists from 38 countries spanning five continents. It is the only jury in the automotive world composed exclusively of women.

This year’s new voting methodology started with choosing the three best models in each category before narrowing those picks down to the individual winners. Eligible vehicles were launched between January and December 2020. As in previous years, votes were certified by the independent auditor Grant Thornton New Zealand.

This year, voting was more complicated due to the pandemic, which limited each juror’s ability to drive. Despite the challenges, jurors made an extra effort to get behind the wheel of these vehicles to evaluate them in time for voting.

One more round of voting remains. Jurors will now choose the Best Car of the Year from among the nine category winners. The results will be announced on March 8, International Women’s Day.

Women’s World Car of the Year is the only car awards group in the world composed exclusively of women motoring journalists. It was created by New Zealand motoring journalist, Sandy Myhre, in 2009. She is currently Honorary President while Marta García serves as Executive President.

The objective of the awards is to choose the best cars of the year. These are not ‘women’s cars’ because there is no such thing. Instead, cars are chosen based on the principles that guide all consumers including safety, quality, price, design, driving dynamics, and environmental impact.

Spotify now has a song list for car lovers curated by Jury members of the Women’s World Car of the Year

guitar-1130589_1920

Songs with lyrics of roads, trips and automobiles is integrated in a unique list of classic rock, blues, soul, country music. The list has been generated in Spotify by jury members of the Women’s World Car of the Year to create almost five hours of the very best music for car lovers around the world.

When Bonny Rice first wrote and recorded Mustang Sally in 1965, he didn’t anticipate it would become one of the most well-known road songs of all time. It gained greater popularity when Wilson Pickett covered it the following year on a single.

That popularity was helped by the fact it appealed to women because for possibly the first time since the car was invented here was a song that showed Sally, as a woman, was far more interested in the car than the man.

The Women’s World Car of the Year playlist in Spotify is almost five hours of the very best classic rock, blues, soul and country and offered to all. Pink Cadillac, by Bruce Springsteen; Highway to Hell, by AC/DC; Little Red Corvette by Prince, Maybellene by Chuck Berry; Drive my Car by The Beatles: Mercury Blues, by Steve Miller Band are just some examples of Women’s World Car of the Year playlist.

Road songs started timidly with the beat generation of the 50’s and 60’s who were young and looked to distinguish themselves from their parents by refusing their conventional way of life, the way they dressed and the cars they drove.

The young wanted striking and different vehicles which otherwise, they might not be able to afford. The car industry, still ailing after the Second War World standstill, saw this trend as a business opportunity and began producing sport cars with V6 and V8 engines at affordable prices. Born were a number of legends such us Chevrolet Corvette, Ford Mustang and the Pontiac Firebird. They were muscle cars that could drive the Route 66 that Jack Kerouac had immortalized in his book On the Road.

Initially, The Mother Road (as it was named by that time) began in Chicago (Illinois), went through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Nuevo México, Arizona and California and finished at Los Angeles. It covered a total of 3940 km (2449 miles). It allowed Nat King Cole to voice the Bobby Troup song with his famous hit (Get Your Kicks On) Route 66. This, too, is included in Women’s World Car of the Year playlist. Other bands such as The Rolling Stones, Depeche Mode, Manhattan Transfer have also paid tribute to the, very probably, most famous road in world.

It’s not the destiny but the journey and other more recent songs that have hundreds of kilometres of asphalt disappearing beneath the chassis in search of freedom include Going Mobile, by The Who; From a Buick 6, by Bob Dylan; and Highway Star by Deep Purple. All of them prove road songs are more alive than ever and all of them are on Women’s World Car of the Year Spotify playlist.

Women’s World Car of the Year is the only car awards in the world comprising exclusively women motoring journalists. It was created by New Zealand motoring journalist, Sandy Myhre, in 2009. She is currently Honorary President while Marta García is Executive President.

The objective of the awards is to choose the best cars of the year. The voting criteria is based on the same principles that guide any driver when choosing a car. Aspects such as safety, quality, price, design, ease of driving, benefits and environmental footprint, among others, are taken into account when casting the vote.

The Gulf region is represented in WWCOTY by UAE based Motoring Jury, Shereen Shabnam who is the Founder of All About Wheels, Editor in Chief of the regional luxury lifestyle magazine of Millionaire Group, Motoring Editor of Madame magazine and Oceania based Trending Business Insights.

The Women’s World Car of the Year (WWCOTY) updates its logo to align with the latest trends

After ten years, Women’s World Car of the Year has updated its logo to align with the latest trends. Based on the original design from Pear Tree Studios in the UK, the new logo keeps its essence, but introduces some guidelines to reflect the spirit of this decade.

Spanish artist Eva Goes has been in charge of the update. My intention has been to preserve the aesthetics of the previous logo. The silhouette of the woman driver has been kept, as it is a very powerful and attractive image that represents very well this group of motoring women journalists.

The lines of the new logo have been softened and synthesized to adapt more to the present time and to make it more effectively function across all formats, but at the same time keeping the ‘face’ of an empowered woman.

Eva has added a circle to frame the portrait to give it more importance and to allow the logo to work effectively as an imagotype. Eva has also used the large acronym WWCOTY for clarity with the whole title underneath as a fuller explanation.

It has been a great pleasure to work on this logo and to contribute to this group of motorized women from all over the world, says Eva Goes.

Women’s World Car of the Year is the only car awards in the world comprising exclusively women motoring journalists. It was created by New Zealand motoring journalist, Sandy Myhre, in 2009. She is currently Honorary President while Marta García performs as Executive President. The objective of the awards is to choose the best cars of the year. The voting criteria is based on the same principles that guide any driver when choosing a car. It is not a ‘woman’s car’ because such a thing does not exist. Aspects such as safety, quality, price, design, ease of driving, benefits and environmental footprint, among others, are taken into account when casting the vote.

The GCC countries are represented in WWCOTY by UAE based Motoring Jury Shereen Shabnam, Editor in Chief of Millionaire Magazine and Motoring contributor for Madame Magazine, Trending Business Insights and All About Wheels.

Women take centre stage at Dubai International Motor Show

By Shereen Shabnam

image3.jpeg

In addition to us as Jury announcing the Women’s World Car of the Year Award 2019 at the Dubai Motor Show, we are also excited to meet with Deborah Sherwood who is currently training females to be instructors in Saudi Arabia due to the change in law that allows women to drive.

Deborah went through a selection process and was thrilled to find out that she had been selected to be part of the team of four to help further develop and implement the training program for the instructors, examiners and lecturers.

We get some insights from her before the Dubai International Motor Show begins.

When did you first venture into the world of driver training?

I trained to be an instructor at the age of 21 as my local driving school needed an female instructor.   I used the income to put myself through University to become a Primary School Teacher. Both Driver Education and Primary Education have always remained my passion. Learning to drive is such an amazing life skill.

How has the Saudi experience been so far?

Honestly, amazing! I arrived with no preconceived ideas. I wanted to just experience Saudi with an open mind and heart. On first arrival I did feel a sense of culture shock but it didn’t take long to appreciate my surroundings, the people and their traditions and the sense of excitement about the vision for Saudi Arabia.

What are the challenges you face as a female driver trainer and how much support have you received from the students?

From the beginning there was a little concern about how the change in law would be accepted. It proved to be of no concern as the immense support of the public became evident. All the students have been so excited to have this opportunity they have really given their training their absolute all.

Tell us about a proud trainer moment since you arrived in Saudi?

There has been many proud trainer moments. One of the most emotional was when the initial instructors received their actual Saudi drivers’ license in preparation for 24th June 2018. Then listening to their stories and seeing the videos of them driving with their families at exactly one second after midnight. Hearing and participating in the joy was overwhelming. It was truly an honour to be part of this amazing change in the country’s history. As time goes on and you speak to many successful graduates of the driving centre you become increasingly aware of how vastly this is affecting their future in such a positive way.

What else is being done in breaking gender barriers for women drivers in Saudi Arabia?

There have been multiple awareness campaigns throughout Saudi to encourage the support of all drivers to be respectful and helpful to the addition of female drivers on the road. There are many employment opportunities available for women that require them to drive to work or drive company vehicles. It has very quickly become the norm to see both male and female drivers in all situations in the region I’m based in.

How many students are you currently training?

I myself along with 3 other assessors have been training instructors since we arrived. Our amazing instructors have gone on to teach thousands of students.

What are your key messages for the visitors to Dubai International Motor Show?

Quite simply, enjoy the show, have fun and feed the dream. But most importantly be a safe driver, drive defensively, respecting the road and other road users. Remember driving is an earned privilege.

Women’s World Car of the Year 2019 winners to be announced at DIMS next Saturday

Womens world car of the year

Voting has commenced to find the Supreme Winner for Women’s World Car of the Year 2019 which will be announced at the Dubai International Motor Show in the presence of Founder of WWCOTY, Sandy Myrhe from New Zealand and the GCC Jury Shereen Shabnam.

Forty-one women motoring journalists from 37 countries make up the Women’s World Car of the Year Jury. Given the rise and rise of female car purchasers world-wide, the female voice is more important than ever and the female demographic is, in fact, the fastest-growing consumer segment in the world and arguably the most influential.

‘The awards will be presented by Sandy Myhre who has covered motor racing from all the major tracks of the world. She was the first woman member of NZ Motoring Writers’ Guild, the first woman member and first President of the NZ Motorsport Media Association.  She is an award-winning journalist and the author of six books.

“It’s an honour to be announcing our awards in Dubai for two main reasons,” she said.

“First, it means we are recognized as an international entity by the organisers which is important to us as journalists. “Secondly, the motor industry, the media and visitors to the show will hear our voice from a significant platform.

“It’s well-known that women aren’t always acknowledged as major buyers of cars but by being in Dubai and giving our opinion on what cars we think were the best in 2019 will take that recognition factor up by a consideration notch.”

Accompanying Sandy will be Shereen Shabnam, a pioneering motoring journalist based out of the UAE since 1999. Shereen is the only female Jury of the Middle East Car of the Year Awards, Founder of All About Wheels, Editor in Chief of the Millionaire Group and Motoring Editor of Trending Business Insights and Madame magazine. Shereen has tested cars all over the world and has been the female voice for motoring in the regional media for over 17 years.

Finalists in this years WWCOTY are Audi e-Tron Quattro, Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla, BMW 3 Series, Tesla Model 3, Volvo S60, Citroën C5 Aircross, Ford Escape, Ford Kuga, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Xceed, Porsche 911, Range Rover Evoque, Renault Clio and Lexus UX.

Winners will also be announced according to the Budget, Family, Green, Luxury, Performance and SUV/Crossover. Models in these categories include, Kia Xceed, Renault Clio, Skoda Scala, BMW 3 Series, Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla, Audi e-Tron Quattro and Kia Soul EV, Tesla Model 3, BMW 8 Series, BMW X7, Porsche Cayenne Coupé, Mercedes AMG A35/45, Porsche 911, Toyota GR Supra, Citroën C5 Aircross, Range Rover Evoque and Lexus UX.

Judges are asked to nominate their Top 10 from a list of eligible cars. These nominations are then collated and put into the various categories including one category for the Supreme Award. Votes are then received for analysis by international accountants, Grant Thornton, from their Auckland (New Zealand) office.

Two other awards are in the 2019 line-up. The Holly Reich Dream Car Award is named in honour of a judge in Women’s World Car of the Year who passed away in 2016 in New York. Judges name the car they would love to have, if only they could. The Woman of Worth Award is in its second year. This award goes to the woman whom judges feel has contributed significantly to the motor industry or motor sport.

Results for the 2019 Women’s World Car of the Year will be announced at the Dubai International Motor Show, United Arab Emirates, held at the Dubai World Trade Centre between 12-16 November 2019.

Harley-Davidson Open House unveils 2015 models

Harley Shereen Shabnam

My first All About Wheels update as soon I got off the plane from Los Angeles was about Harley-Davidson Middle East and North Africa (MENA)’s Open House Day in UAE – it included an exciting array of events hosted by the local dealerships for the Harley-Davidson community in each city and launched Harley-Davidson’s 2015 line up of motorcycles in Fujairah, Abu Dhabi and Dubai….pity I was not able to be part of it but as they say, when Hollywood calls, you just have to go!

Fujairah hosted the first of the three with over 250 riders and aficionados gathering at the dealership for breakfast before setting out for the first Fujairah Bike Week and Shukran Khalifa Parade. The second Open House was held in Abu Dhabi where over 120 enthusiasts gathered to see the new models of 2015 followed by an unveiling of the Street Glide® Special at the Toast of Americas Festival that took place at the Abu Dhabi City Golf Club.

On October 31, 2014, while I was busy in Hollywood, the Open House Day had 250 attendees at the Dubai dealership where they saw Harley-Davidson’s 2015 line of iconic motorcycles with some refreshments followed by a ride out to the Gulf Bike Week. A grand unveiling of the CVO Street Glide® 2015 took place at the dealership and at Gulf Bike Week. A highlight of the day was Harley-Davidson leading the Thunder Parade – a signature part of the Gulf Bike Week that saw riders from across the region come down to participate.

The 2015 range has Harley-Davidson hard on the throttle of innovation, combining world class aerodynamics and superb audio with advanced ergonomic comfort. Propelled by Project RUSHMORE’s customisations and the buzz of Project LiveWire’s combination of heritage and technology, the 2015 line up is carefully crafted for maximum enjoyment of the open road.
